About Kundalini Yoga East
Kundalini Yoga East was the first and is the longest running Kundalini Yoga studio in New York City. Founded in 1971 by husband and wife Sat Jivan Singh and Sat Jivan Kaur Khalsa, the studio and its community nurture and train people of all walks of life in Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.
Personally guided by the master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, the Sat Jivans created a sacred oasis where you can immerse yourself in an inspiring and inviting learning environment. They have personally trained and supervise their staff - comprised of the finest teachers in New York - to ensure that you receive premium instruction in the ancient practice of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.
Kundalini Yoga East offers hundreds of classes, workshops, special events, and teacher trainings throughout the year. Our community focuses on going deeper into the Kundalini yogic methodology and lifestyle; and all classes, events, and workshops give our students the tools to explore their depth and vastness, and the opportunity to exalt in the sacredness of their own soul. Every curriculum we offer is based on the art and science of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, adhering to the purity and piety of the "Golden Chain" present throughout these teachings.
All Kundalini Yoga classes begin with tuning, using the Adi Mantra, "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo", meaning, "I bow to the subtle divine wisdom, the divine teacher within". Guided by the teacher, students chant the Adi Mantra three times as they take a long, deep breath.
Following the Adi Mantra, the class is modeled as such: we begin with breathing (pranayam) and warmup exercises, which are followed by a Kundalini kriya (series of exercises) that range from subtle and simple movements to moderately physical and fairly strenuous exercises. Students work at their own comfort level and physical capacity through the Kundalini kriya, which leads into a deep relaxation set to the powerful healing sounds of the symphonic gong or music. Our classes culminate in a powerful meditation, a closing song, and a collective Sat Nam chant, which means, "Truth in my Infinite Identity".
Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is, was, and always will be a yoga for people who live and work in the world.
